The value of your presence:
Recently, I have felt my father’s presence since his passing in 2021. I had a very close connection with my father even though he rarely spoke in depth on any topic. He was very much an introvert. I could easily remember the 3 remarks he always made to me when we would visit one another: “Did you change the oil on your car? Did you check the expiration date on the milk? I think it’s time to eat.” Yet, despite the limited number of words shared between us, I knew one thing for sure was that he loved me. His presence solidified everything. I will never forget that.
Our Heavenly Father’s love is even more profound, especially when we become more and more present to Him. The connection between us and Christ is truly a relationship. It must be nurtured, cultivated, and cared for. As a teen, I often would grudgingly attend Mass because I understood so little of the beauty of the celebration. I did not focus on the Eucharist and its gift to me. It would take 30 years before centering myself on the Eucharist.

How does one begin to develop a deeper relationship with Christ?
Simply, be present.
When you attend Mass next time, pause and focus on the importance of the Eucharist.
This can be done by preparing your heart and mind. We are asked to recall our sins during the Penitential Rite. Attentively listen to the scripture, psalm, and gospel readings meditating on its message. Upon and after receiving the Eucharist share a private prayer of gratitude with Christ as you return to your seat. I encourage a prayer of the Anima Christi which allows one to meditate more deeply.
Prayer:
Oh Lord, teach me to be more present upon receiving the Holy Eucharist. Let me never forget the love you share with us. In your name, we pray. Amen.
