April showers

Coincidentally, I was awakened by the sound of the rain tapping at my window. As my eyes opened, a flash of light filled the room from the lightning, and the house stirred from the thunder. “Praise, Jesus!” I whispered quietly. Because, although the storm appeared startling, I understood the much-needed rain was necessary for the nourishment of life. It was also indicative that Spring was arriving.

Spring is a reminder that hope and joy are always within reach. It is a time when the coldness of winter should cease, and the warmness of summer enters. Yet, in my youth, I did not appreciate this entrance into summer. The dark clouds and the rainy days in succession were simply interruptions in my day and my comfort. But now, I have adopted a new perspective regarding this time.

As an alternative, I now accept the rainy season as valued, understood, and life giving. Think for a moment about the purpose of rain. It is to replenish and revive the plant life that has been dormant throughout the winter. The plants then break free of the previously frozen ground and reach for the direction of the sun to ensure its full development.

How are we like the plants of the earth? Well, we too remain dormant in our walk with Christ. Yet, we must actively nourish our relationship with Him. How can you break free from the cold and dormant ground of life and reach for Christ as the plants extend towards the sun?

Suggestion: Reconciliation, simply.

As we repent, we become renewed just as the rain renews the earth. Nevertheless, we must do more. Let Christ be the sun you extend towards for your continued spiritual growth. Read His words within the holy scripture daily. Attend Mass to receive His daily bread whenever possible. Do not forget to smile and welcome others.  Therefore, I must ask, “What is your rain?”

Prayer:

Dear Lord, help me to renew my mind, body, and soul this Lenten Season. Help me to always see the importance of your events and their timing for all things in life. You are our Sun. Let me always extend myself to you to receive your nourishment. Amen. By Isabel Anderson
