Remembering those who inspire….
Above my mantle is a small bronze trophy that is approximately 33 years in age yet still looks pristine. It was one my band director had presented to me in 7th grade for being an outstanding student. He was the first educator that opened my eyes to my potential and where I first began to develop self-confidence. Never before had I known the outcome of effort, self-confidence, dedication, and hard work. You see, I had a unique upbringing that was extremely challenging, yet even as a child I knew I would not let it define me. With much bleakness surrounding me in my home, it was easy to believe the world was a terrible place and that I was merely a victim. However, school became a small safe haven for me. Still, it was no walk in the park, as I would find the same hardship of indifference and unwelcomeness amongst my peers. Humility was learned early on in life which left me curious to listen to educators and my military leaders that cared deeply about my future. Therefore, I followed the guidance of my educators from kindergarten all the way through graduate school, and in the military. It was where I first realized I had the capacity to do many things as long as I put my mind to it. My educators and leaders surrounded me with positivity and goal setting. It was as though the voice of Jesus spoke through these wonderful and inspirational humans. I am forever grateful to all those who inspired me to be more and do more. Who can you inspire with your words and love today? Amen.
